Overview
This article walks you through setting up a Stripe Reader S700 or S710 and registering it to your TowPay account in the Stripe Dashboard. The S710 adds cellular connectivity; setup is otherwise identical for both devices.
Three steps: power on and charge the reader, connect it to WiFi, then register it in the Stripe Dashboard.
Prerequisites
Stripe Reader S700 or S710, with the included USB-C cable and power adapter
A WiFi network using WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal encryption (open/enterprise networks are not supported)
The reader must be on the same local network as the machine running your Towing Management Software (Autura Software)
Access to the Stripe Dashboard at dashboard.stripe.com
Admin PIN for the reader's settings menu: 07139
Step 1: Power On and Charge the Reader
The S700 and S710 have a built-in battery, so there is no battery to install.
Plug the provided USB-C cable into the port on the left side of the reader.
Connect the other end to the provided power adapter and plug it into a power outlet. The reader requires 12W of power to operate properly.
Hold the power button on the right side until the screen turns on.
Use only the Stripe power adapter and cable that came with the reader. Other adapters or cables may not charge the device properly and may void the warranty.
Once powered on, press the power button to sleep or wake the device. To power off, hold the power button until the power-off option appears, then select it.
On a full charge, expect about 15 hours of battery life. Leave the reader plugged in and powered on even when not in use, so it can receive automatic software updates.
Screen Timeout
When not connected to power, the screen times out after 1 hour by default to preserve battery. To change this: open Settings > Appearance and choose a new timeout from the dropdown. The screen wakes automatically when the device is touched, picked up, or a payment is started.
Step 2: Connect to WiFi
The Stripe Reader S700/S710 must connect to the same local network as your Towing Management Software (Autura Software).
Swipe from the left edge of the screen to the right to open the settings menu.
Tap Settings, enter admin PIN 07139.
Select WiFi settings, choose your network, and connect.
The network must use WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal encryption and be password protected.
Note: Joining a new network disconnects the reader from any existing wireless connection.
Connecting by Ethernet (Optional)
Ethernet connectivity requires the optional hub, sold separately in the Stripe Dashboard. The hub provides wired 10/100 Ethernet, keeps the reader charged, and adds two USB-A ports for peripherals such as a barcode scanner or printer. It is compatible with the S700/S710 dock for countertop use.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the hub to your router.
Connect the hub to power using its built-in USB-C cable. Use the power adapter included with your reader so the hub receives the 27W it needs to power the reader and any attached peripherals.
Connect the USB-C cable provided with the reader to the hub and the reader (the right-angle connector goes into the reader).
To confirm Ethernet is working, check that the reader is charging and that the Ethernet icon appears in the status bar. The reader gets its IP address by DHCP and begins communicating with Stripe as soon as the cable is plugged in.
Network priority: the reader connects by Ethernet whenever it can. If docked with an Ethernet cable plugged in, it uses Ethernet even if WiFi was set up first; remove it from the dock and it switches back to WiFi. Docked without an Ethernet cable, it uses WiFi. On cellular-enabled S710 readers, the order is Ethernet, then WiFi, then cellular, handled automatically by the device.
Step 3: Register Your Reader
Charge and connect your reader to WiFi before registration.
Once powered on and connected to the internet, register in the Stripe Dashboard at dashboard.stripe.com:
Log in and, in the left-hand menu under Products, expand Payments and select Terminal.
On the Readers tab, click Register reader.
Select a registration method: Pairing code, Serial number, or Order number.
Enter the pairing code from the reader and click Next.
Provide a name for the reader.
Assign it to a location or create a new one.
Confirm the details and click Register.
Registration Methods
All readers selected in a single registration are assigned to the same location.
Pairing code — the three-word, hyphenated code shown on the reader. Use this when you have the reader in hand, or when re-registering a reader currently registered to another Stripe account.
Serial number — printed on the box and on the back of the reader, and listed on the hardware order. Does not require physical access to the device. Up to 10 readers can be registered at once by entering serial numbers separated by commas.
Order number — only works for readers ordered by the account or one of its sub-accounts. If the reader is not tied to an order on that account, this method will not work.
Generating a Pairing Code
A pairing code may already be on screen — if a reader has never been registered, the code appears automatically when you unbox it. Only generate one manually if it isn't showing, or you're re-registering.
Swipe from the left edge of the reader's screen to the right to open the settings menu.
Tap Settings and enter admin PIN 07139.
Tap Generate Pairing Code.
A three-word, hyphenated code appears on the screen.
Note: the pairing code expires after a short time. If it expires before you finish registering, generate a new one and try again.
What Happens Next
Once registered, the reader is linked to your Stripe account and location, and will communicate with your Towing Management Software (Autura Software) over the same local network. Transactions run on the reader will post to the connected TowPay account.
Troubleshooting
Reader will not power on: confirm you are using the Stripe adapter and cable, and that the outlet supplies at least 12W.
WiFi will not connect: confirm the network uses WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal encryption and is password protected. Open or enterprise networks are not supported.
Reader connected but not reachable from your TMS: confirm the reader is on the same local network as the machine running your Towing Management Software (Autura Software).
Pairing code not accepted: codes expire. Generate a new one and register again, or try the order number or serial number method instead.
Reader not appearing in the Dashboard: confirm you assigned it to the correct location during registration.
Serial number registration fails: a reader already registered to an unrelated Stripe account cannot be moved by serial number. Generate a pairing code on the device and use the pairing code method instead.
